Sailors’ Knives, Safety Gear and Tools of the Trade

One of the unique parts about being a sailor is the tools of the trade. There are not too many work sites where you are required to show up with a knife. Working on boats for weeks or months on end, the life of a mariner could be described as “prison with the threat of drowning,” as stated by 1600 ton captain and U.S. Coast Guard veteran Dale Ball. To mitigate the drowning part, sailors must wear floatation vests at all times while working on the water. Below I have included some photographs of common seafarer’s tools you might find on a modern merchant ship.
